Azog the Defiler Costume

Azog the Defiler is a fictional character from J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy book, The Hobbit, and also appears in the film adaptation of the Hobbit movies. Azog is a very large, very powerful Orc, who is also known as The Pale Orc and Azog the Goblin. The character of Azog claimed himself as ruler over the abandoned Dwarf mines located in Moria during the period of the Third Age. Leader of the Goblins of Moria, he started the war between the Dwarves and the Orcs in TA 2790. Azog the Defiler was responsible for the beheading of King Thror. A prominent figure in The Hobbit movie series, Azog makes a great character to dress up as for Halloween or Cosplay. Here are some ideas for creating your own Azog the Defiler costume.

The mask is grayin color to match Azog’s pale skin tone, and has his fierce expression and downcast mouth. These boots are the perfect boots for creating an Azog the Defiler costume. Made from man-made materials, with brown vinyl uppers with detailed stitching. The boots feature three horizontal straps that are anchored at the sides and back of the zipper, with a front panel that slides in under the straps. The boots have rubber soles and lug tread. Rich brown color. Offered in sizes small through extra large, which fits men’s sizes eight through fourteen. And, you can wear them all the time!

Azog Mace

The perfect accessory for any Azog costume is the must-have Azog Mace. Looks just like Azog’s weapon of choice in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” The mace measures around 25 inches long and has the appearance of being weathered or distressed for an authentic look.

Kid’s Padded Muscle Shirt

This padded muscle shirt will give any boy a hulking Orc look. Made from 100% polyester, the shirt is printed to look like real muscles and skin. It is padded to create the look of bulging biceps, shoulders, pecs, and abdominal muscles. While the color of this shirt will not exactly match the skin tone of Azog the Defiler, with some fabric paint and a sponge paint brush it can. Simply match your paint shade to the grayish color of the Azog face mask and then add red lines that appear to be scars with red fabric paint and a paintbrush.

This is a padded muscle shirt with a Velcro closure that fits men up to six feet tall and 200 pounds in the standard size, and in plus size, fits up to six feet three inches and 300 pounds. The shirt is a nude skin tone color. It would make the perfect body for an Azog the Defiler costume with a few touch ups. Simply paint the shirt with gray fabric paint that matches the Azog latex face mask, and then add the reddish scar streaks with red fabric paint and a paintbrush.

Make Your Own Azog the Defiler Loin Cloth

Using some pleather fabric and a belt, you can create your own Azog loin cloth, as they seem to be impossible to find ready made. By referring to a photograph of Azog, you can easily cut the pieces to fit and then do some very simple sewing of the sides and waist. Use layers of fabric to create the texture and look of Azog’s garment. Use Velcro closures in the back and to make any size adjustments in the waist area. This dark brown vinyl textured faux leather pleather fabric by Big Z Fabric is sold by the yard and would work well for this project.

Keep the sides slit (wear brown shorts underneath or wear with gray compression pants for full, modest coverage) and make sure to have the triangular shaped piece that comes up over the stomach area. Fabric has a felt backing and is 55 inches wide. Pair with this Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi Jedi Belt for a great Azog look.

Making Azog’s Mace

For a realistic looking one that you could make yourself at home, consider using these ideas to create your own mace from polymer clay and other odds and ends gathered from around the house or from a local craft store.
